Cocktail dresses are worn by women during cocktail parties, semi formal and formal occasions. The main feature of any cocktail dress is the length. There are various lengths of cocktail dresses to choose from. It depends on the fashion and local custom. The length can be from just above the knee to touching the ankle. The tea length cocktail dresses are 2 inches above the ankle.

There are also cocktail dresses that touch around the ankle and are called ballerina length cocktail dresses.  These ballerina cocktail dresses are generally worn as an evening gown to semi formal and formal occasions. There are cocktail dresses designed less elaborately for semi formal occasions. They are shorter and can be worn at various casual occasions are well. Cocktail dresses are very popular form of women’s clothing. The women in the mid 20th century used to wear cocktail dresses during the afternoons. These afternoon dresses even qualified as equivalent to men’s business wear.

Cocktail dresses, by the 1980s, were redefined. They were no longer clothing defined only y length but the level of luxury and glamour that the dress could offer. These dresses were worn frequently in formal dances but not falls or white tie affairs. Cocktail dresses are not ball gowns. There is still an element of casualness attached to it. Christian Dior was the first to revolutionize the term ‘cocktail dresses’ that indicated evening semi casual wear during the 1940s.
